Job Title: Policy Officer

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Policy Officer to join our team at IOM3 (Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining). The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the delivery and further development of IOM3 policy activity, and maximising its impact.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Leverage and synthesise the expertise of members, including Technical Community Leadership Teams, to develop policy contributions.
  • Support the effective communication of policy activity to help maximise its visibility and impact, for example by contributing to IOM3 news items, social media content and internal and external policy updates.
  • Maintain an excellent understanding of current policy issues that impact and are impacted by materials, minerals and mining.
  • Identify key themes and upcoming policy issues, including through working with the Technical Community Leadership Teams and other members.
  • Support the development of IOM3 Policy Papers.
  • Undertake research and prepare internal and external policy briefings.
  • Represent IOM3 at external events and meetings.
  • Work with the wider team to support the delivery of policy content across IOM3 workstreams, including for events and training.
Person Specification:
  • Knowledge and/or a demonstratable interest in the UK policy landscape relevant to IOM3 members, preferably about at least one of the following: net-zero; critical materials; materials innovation; energy-intensive industries such as iron and steel, cement or ceramics; packaging; skills; circular economy; energy; or research development.
  • A proactive approach with the ability to use own initiative and rapidly respond to a range of varying tasks.
  • Ability to pick up complex technical information, with good research, evidence gathering and evaluation skills.
  • Comfortable communicating with a range of internal and external stakeholders with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Ability to independently manage own time and workload, and willingness to be flexible.
  • Experience working in policy or industry relevant to materials, minerals and mining is appreciated, but not necessary.
