Senior Manager of Occupational Health and Safety

The Senior Manager of Occupational Health and Safety is responsible for the overall management of occupational health and safety within the institute. This role requires the development and implementation of effective management systems and processes to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and the achievement of strategic science objectives.
Main Responsibilities:- Develop and implement the institute's occupational health and safety strategy, including the establishment of clear policies, procedures, and standards.
- Lead the management of occupational health and safety risks across the organisation, ensuring that risks are assessed, mitigated, and controlled.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with regulatory bodies, industry partners, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and the sharing of best practice.
- Support the development of science strategies by ensuring that all aspects of occupational health and safety are fully aligned, integrated, and supportive of management of this critical Major Hazard.
- Build robust stakeholder assurance through development of Safety Performance Indicators, workplace inspections, internal audit programmes, incident investigations, Learning from Experience exercises, benchmarking against comparators, and cooperation with and support for HSE Planned Interventions. This includes RIDDOR reporting and supporting response to HSE investigations or civil claims.
- Identify occupational health and safety competency requirements and build and deliver a programme of internal and external training to satisfy those requirements.
- Contribute to the corporate Risk & Opportunities Register and use organisational and departmental occupational health and safety risks identified and quantified as a basis for SMART operational planning.
- Assist in the development of process safety management to ensure the highest levels of reliability and resilience of maintained assets.
- Foster a positive occupational health and safety culture by building excellent working relationships, involving and consulting staff, and developing initiatives to raise awareness, participation, and engagement.
- Undertake external engagement with national and international bodies and groups to share best practice, benchmark performance, build collaborative links, and establish Pirbright as a centre of excellence in occupational health and safety.
Estimated salary: £55,000 - £75,000 per annum.
Requirements:- NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals, or equivalent qualification in health & safety management.
- Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent accreditation.
- IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management, or equivalent or higher qualification in environmental management.
- Experience of environmental management and/or hazardous waste management.
- Qualification and/or experience in training.
