Senior Colorectal Surgery Fellow

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Colorectal Surgery Fellow to join our team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Job DescriptionThis is an exciting opportunity for a senior trainee in general surgery to develop their expertise in colorectal surgery. The fellow will work alongside twelve Consultant Colorectal Surgeons who have sub-speciality interests in advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer, minimally-invasive and robotic surgery, pelvic floor surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, complex inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal failure.
The successful candidate will be expected to conduct rounds and clinics independently, supervise and support junior doctors with acute admissions, operating and referrals, and participate in teaching and research activities.
The role offers a broad programme of advanced training with the option to tailor the year to focus on one or more subspecialties.
The post is fixed term for 12 months and it is envisaged that the successful candidate will achieve the training objectives within this period.
Responsibilities- Ward Management: The successful candidate will be responsible for managing patients on the ward, including assessing their needs, developing care plans, and evaluating outcomes.
- Main Case Operating Theatres: The fellow will assist in the management of main case operating theatres, including coordinating lists, managing patient flow, and maintaining theatre protocols.
- Day Case Operating Theatres: The successful candidate will assist in the management of day case operating theatres, including coordinating lists, managing patient flow, and maintaining theatre protocols.
- Outpatient Clinics: The fellow will contribute to the delivery of outpatient clinics, including assessing patients, developing treatment plans, and evaluating outcomes.
- Post-Operative Intensive Care: The successful candidate will be responsible for managing patients in post-operative intensive care, including assessing their needs, developing care plans, and evaluating outcomes.
- On-Call SR Duties: The fellow will participate in on-call senior registrar duties, including supervising and supporting junior doctors with acute admissions, operating and referrals.
- Discussions with Relatives: The successful candidate will engage with patients' relatives, providing information, support, and guidance throughout the care process.
- Initiation/Change of Treatment: The fellow will be responsible for initiating or changing treatment plans, including ordering tests, prescribing medications, and referring patients to specialist services.
- Research & Audit: The successful candidate will contribute to research and audit activities, including designing studies, collecting data, and presenting findings.
- Teaching Juniors: The fellow will participate in teaching and mentoring junior doctors, sharing knowledge, skills, and best practices.
- Essential: Completion of registrar/residency training in general/surgical oncology (CCT) or equivalent, FRCS or equivalent qualification.
- Desirable: Experience in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, clinical research (publications), teaching, and colonoscopy.
