Job Summary

The Veterinary Nurse Specialist will play a critical role in providing high standards of client and patient care in our veterinary practice. This position requires a key member of the nursing team to work effectively with the Clinical Nursing Manager to nurture great team ethics and provide guidance and support to junior nursing staff and animal care/kennel assistants.

Main Responsibilities
  • Ensure the highest standard of care is provided to 100% of our patients at all times.
  • Monitor and manage costs effectively while maintaining the highest standards of care.
  • Maintain accurate client and patient records.
  • Provide an efficient, courteous, and helpful service to all clients, suppliers, and external contacts.
  • Participate in the admission and discharge process of patients.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continued professional development.
  • Liaise between the nursing team and other teams to ensure effective communication.
  • Promote our services, employees, and products.
  • Understand and implement practice and group policies.
  • Take an active role in the training programme of veterinary nurses and animal care/kennel assistants.
Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake all general nursing duties and provide assistance to veterinary surgeons as required.
  • Carry out specific tasks or responsibilities allocated by the Clinical Nursing Manager or Practice Manager.
  • Ensure organisation and preparation for patients and provide support during low staffing periods.
  • Administer treatment and dispense medication as directed by veterinary surgeons.
  • Keep accurate records of medical records, anaesthetic sheets, and hospitalisation forms.
  • Care for in-patients, including pre-op care, monitoring, and recovery, and post-op care and medication.
  • Ensure effective stock rotation and replenishment.
  • Participate in out-of-hours nursing rota as agreed.
  • Support with reception duties and report on progress of in-patients to clients by telephone as needed.
  • Participate in the cleaning and maintenance of premises and patient areas.
  • Provide support and assistance to the Clinical Nursing Manager and Practice Manager as required.
  • Assist with marketing initiatives, including open evenings or open days.
  • Understand health and safety risks and follow correct procedures.
  • Welcome and support visiting veterinary surgeons, students, and work experience employees.
  • Attend regular meetings with the Clinical Nursing Manager and other employees.
  • Participate in relevant CPD and in-house training.
