Job Summary

Surrey Downs Health & Care

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Hand Therapist to join our dynamic MSK Hand Therapy Team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in hand therapy, preferably within the NHS, and experience in managing patients with acute trauma, elective surgery, plastics, and rheumatology.

The caseload is varied, with a mix of acute trauma, post-elective surgery, and community referrals. The team is cohesive and supportive, and we offer an active in-service training program and excellent links with consultant surgical colleagues.

Main Responsibilities

  1. To provide specialist hand assessments and treatment for clients with trauma/surgery to their upper limb and/or chronic conditions.
  2. To apply specialist knowledge and skills across the range of impairments, procedures, and practices gained through practical experience.
  3. To assess and implement specialist treatment programs as an autonomous practitioner, maintaining associated clinical records.
  4. To work unsupervised, reporting back and receiving guidance and teaching from the senior hand therapist/team leader.
  5. To participate in the day-to-day management of the specialist service provision, undertaking tasks as delegated by the Team Leader.
  6. To provide formal supervision to nominated staff members and students.
  7. To work cross-site with St Helier Hospital and/or provide Hand Therapy within Consultant Led Clinics at Epsom General Hospital or at St Helier.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical

  1. To carry and prioritize own patient caseload and other ongoing tasks, allocating appropriate work to technical instructors and students.
  2. To perform specialist therapy assessments of patients with diverse and complex presentations, using advanced clinical reasoning skills.
  3. To attend consultant outpatients clinics and assess and treat patients as necessary.
  4. To incorporate standard assessment tools with patients and apply additional relevant skills in specialized splint making.
  5. To communicate sensitively and reassuringly complex condition and functional risk/limitation related information to patients/carers.
  6. To participate in multi-disciplinary meetings as the hand therapist representative for individual patients.
  7. To evaluate patient progress, reassess, and alter treatment programs as required.
  8. To manage clinical risk in relation to your own caseload.
  9. To maintain accurate, legible, and complete clinical records of all patient-related interventions.

Organisational

  1. To undertake delegated responsibility for the screening, prioritization, and allocation of referrals within the clinical area.
  2. To provide regular teaching sessions and contribute to the performance assessment of rotational Physios and technical instructors.
  3. To provide training sessions to staff from other teams and agencies.
  4. To keep accurate statistical information to assist in the monitoring and management of the service.
  5. To participate in ongoing data collection for clinical audit and departmental research.
  6. To attend relevant team, departmental, or other appropriate meetings and actively contribute to the development of policies and procedures.
  7. To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out hand therapy duties.

Professional

  1. To be responsible for teaching student therapists to graduate level on therapeutic skills and knowledge within core clinical areas.
  2. To actively participate in the in-service training program by attending and contributing to discussions.
  3. To maintain and further develop current specialist knowledge, skills, and evidenced-based practice.
  4. To participate in formal supervision as a supervisee.
  5. To participate in the SDHC appraisal scheme and formulate a personal development plan.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy.
  • Registration with Health Professions Council HCPC.
  • Evidence of CPD including relevant postgraduate specialist training courses in appropriate clinical fields.

Experience

  • Relevant and significant postgraduate experience with a variety of client groups and service settings.
  • Completed a previous rotation (or equivalent) in a Hand Therapy Department.
  • Working knowledge of a broad range of conditions and client groups.
  • Experience with acute elective, acute trauma patients, as well as plastics and rheumatology.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Able to provide bespoke splints for patients.
  • Able to manage wounds and remove stitches where necessary.
  • Able to provide personalized recovery and rehabilitation plans to a broad range of Hand/wrist-related pathologies.
  • Awareness of College of Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy standards.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in providing and receiving complex information.
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate, and make rapid accurate clinical decisions in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Prioritization of workload, good time management, and ability to work to protocols and deadlines.
  • Ability to delegate appropriately to others to maximize use of skill mix.
  • Computer literate.
  • Car driver/owner.
