Research Scientist in Composites for Space Applications

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Research Fellow or Research Assistant in Composites for Space Structures. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering composites manufacturing technologies for the space industry, with a focus on expanding and optimising the design and characteristics of space-based carbon fibre optical reflective mirrors.
The role involves collaboration with industry partners, participating in joint developments, and translating research results into manufacturing and simulation technologies addressing the needs of end users. You will work closely with external partners, as well as colleagues within the Composites and Advanced Materials Centre, the Surface Engineering and Precision Centre, and the Space Research Group at Cranfield.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver composites manufacturing technologies for the space industry
- Collaborate with industry partners on joint developments
- Translate research results into manufacturing and simulation technologies
- Work closely with external partners and colleagues within the Composites and Advanced Materials Centre, the Surface Engineering and Precision Centre, and the Space Research Group at Cranfield
Requirements:
- Knowledge and experience in composites and finite element analysis
- Experience in composites manufacturing and process simulation
- Exposure to testing of composite components and application of structures to space
- Ability to communicate effectively at a technical level
- Capability to clearly summarise achievements to brief colleagues and project partners
