We are seeking a highly skilled Environmental Health Officer to join our central London team on a contract basis.

Job Overview:

This role involves providing technical professional environmental health services with the primary goal of protecting and enhancing the health and wellbeing of every resident, worker, and visitor within the Borough.

The post holder will be required to carry out their duties in the Food, Health and Safety Team.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. To conduct thorough investigations of service requests and identify contraventions of legislation, taking corrective actions as necessary, including presenting evidence at legal hearings.
  2. To inspect or visit vehicles, stalls, plant, or equipment to ensure compliance with regulations.
  3. To enforce legislation and other powers in a timely manner, including preparing reports and dealing with related correspondence.
  4. To conduct planned food hygiene and standards inspections, prepare reports, and deal with related documents.
  5. To scrutinize, process, and comment on applications, plans, and submissions for environmental guidance or clearance.
  6. To undertake sampling, testing, or seizure of food, equipment, materials, or substances.
  7. To liaise with officers within Regulatory Services, council services, outside organizations, companies, and individuals to deliver an effective Environmental Health Service.
  8. To ensure the Group Manager is kept fully informed on any aspect of work which is controversial, political, strategic, financial, or otherwise of a sensitive or highly complex nature.
  9. To stay up-to-date with changes in legislation, policies, attitudes, and techniques relevant to their service groups.
  10. To assist in the preparation and execution of publicity campaigns and educational work.
  11. To assist at meetings, working parties, public meetings, exhibitions, or demonstrations.
  12. To carry out specialist environmental health duties as requested and in accordance with experience and training.
  13. To conduct research or survey work related to the work of the Environmental Health Department and participate in specialist project teams as required.
  14. To maintain accurate records of financial information to ensure robust payment and income data.
  15. To meet pre-set financial targets and ensure relevant budgets are not exceeded.
  16. To provide training for staff and official visitors regarding the function and duties of the Environmental Health Department.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Successful completion of The Higher Certificate in Food Control.
  2. Fully qualified EHORB registered and eligible for Corporate Membership of the CIEH.
  3. Existing technical knowledge of the relevant areas of Environmental Health or the ability to develop technical knowledge.
  4. Experience of taking enforcement action.
  5. Experience of various effective communications techniques.
  6. Ability to accurately draft legal documents.
  7. Proficient user of Microsoft Office specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  8. Ability to accurately record data using specialist software systems.
  9. Flexible attitude and able to adapt to change in tasks at short notice.
  10. Able to work effectively as part of a team and deliver successful results.
  11. Strong interpersonal skills and able to challenge, support, influence, and engage management and peers.
  12. Self-motivated and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and targets while producing high-quality work.
  13. Able to progress sometimes complex projects in a timely manner accurately and in accordance with relevant legislation and guidelines.
  14. Ability to plan and prioritize workloads with minimal supervision and achieve regular and consistent outputs and performance targets.
  15. Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills and able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing with a wide range of contacts and deal with difficult or complex issues.
  16. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
