Job Description


As a Curator of Natural Science, you will be responsible for the development, care, and interpretation of our vast natural science collection. This includes around 800,000 specimens, making it one of the largest collections of its kind in the country.


You will work closely with colleagues across Leeds Museums and Galleries, as well as external partners and communities, to maximise the impact of our collections and the experiences of our audiences.


Your key responsibilities will include:



  • Caring for the collection, both on display and in storage, to ensure its preservation for future generations.
  • Working with colleagues to implement and suggest exhibitions, learning, and display proposals that showcase the collection in an engaging and accessible way.
  • Developing and delivering exhibitions, events, and educational activities that appeal to a wide range of audiences.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to develop partnerships with community-based organisations and cultural institutions to further the service's objectives.
  • Managing and developing staff, including Assistant Curators, project-funded staff, and volunteers.
  • Participating in the briefing and training of front-of-house staff, guides, and others as relevant.
  • Being responsible for the interpretation of the collections in your care, including through displays, publications, lectures, events, and other outreach work.
  • Undertaking research, fieldwork, and visits relevant to the collections and their documentation, development, and interpretation.
  • Promoting the positive image of the service at all times and working with Audience Development to advocate the value of the collections to key stakeholders, opinion formers, visitors, and the people of Leeds.
  • Maximising the commercial and merchandising opportunities offered by the collections, working with the Commercial team.
  • Representing the service in professional networks and contributing to innovative collections-based projects across Leeds Museums and Galleries.
  • Ensuring compliance with Health and Safety policies and procedures, adhering to recognised Health & Safety qualifications specific to job need, and carrying out risk assessments and implementing safe systems of work as required.
  • Understanding and embracing Leeds City Council Values and Behaviours and codes of conduct.
  • Able to understand and observe Leeds City Council equality and diversity policies.
  • Carry out all duties having regard to an employee's responsibility under Health and Safety Policies.

  • Knowledge of a range of ICT applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of the Health & Safety and Equalities legislation.
  • Knowledge of Collections Management issues.
  • Awareness of the Museums Association's Code of Ethics.
  • Knowledge of current thinking in the relevant field.
  • Experience of working in a museum or gallery, paid or voluntary.

  • Experience of object handling in a museum environment.
  • Experience of planning and delivering exhibitions & events with a wide variety of audiences.

  • Experience of national standards, e.g., Spectrum.
  • Demonstrate an interest in the work of Leeds Museums and Galleries.
