Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Breastfeeding Peer Support Worker to join our team at Nottingham CityCare Partnership CIC. As a Breastfeeding Peer Support Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting families to feed their baby their way, promoting and supporting breastfeeding through telephone contacts, home visits, and breastfeeding groups.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic team of Health Visitors, School Nurses, Family Nurses, and support staff who are passionate about supporting families to achieve their breastfeeding goals. As a Breastfeeding Peer Support Worker, you will be responsible for engaging with pregnant and postnatal parents, and their partners, in their homes, by telephone, and in virtual/face-to-face clinics and groups in the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support women and their families with their breastfeeding journey, promoting and supporting breastfeeding through telephone contacts, home visits, and breastfeeding groups.
  • Engage with pregnant and postnatal parents, and their partners, in their homes, by telephone, and in virtual/face-to-face clinics and groups in the community.
  • Support families to responsively feed their babies their way (breast milk or combination) in the antenatal period and first six weeks of the postnatal period, with an emphasis on those who are less likely to initiate or maintain breastfeeding.
  • Offer brief intervention support and signposting for healthier lifestyle choices.
  • Work closely with professionals, including Health Visitors, Midwives, and Family Nurses, to support breastfeeding initiation and maintenance.
  • Support with breastfeeding and community groups, ensuring that rooms are set up for groups/clinics, that equipment is clean, that health promotion literature is available, and health promotion displays are up to date.
  • Promote Healthy Start and the appropriate use of Vitamin D for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and babies.
  • Offer brief intervention and signposting for healthier lifestyle choices around healthier eating and increased physical exercise for the family.
  • Be flexible as required in supporting service delivery across the whole City.
  • Signpost clients to additional ratified support and resources, Feed Your Way, Specialist Infant Feeding Clinic.
  • Maintain contemporaneous healthcare records using SystmOne in line with National and Nottingham CityCare Partnership policies and procedures.
  • Work using own initiative within the limitations of the role; always promoting high-quality care and Nottingham CityCare Partnership values and behaviours.
  • Participate in breastfeeding incentives as required.
  • Undertake any other duties which may be reasonably required within the remit of the role.
Requirements
  • An ability to plan and organise own workload.
  • A good standard of written and spoken English.
  • An ability to interpret and work within the parameters of standard operating procedures, care pathways, and other policies and procedures.
  • Evidence of understanding of confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Flexibility to be a team member yet can be self-reliant and self-motivated.
  • Interpersonal and time management skills, especially communicating with people at all levels.
  • An understanding of the diverse communities living in Nottingham city.
  • An ability to use Microsoft Office programmes, including MS Outlook and MS Word.
Desirable
  • Awareness of local and national children's public health agendas.
  • Previous knowledge of SystmOne electronic record-keeping system.
  • Knowledge and understanding of patient confidentiality.
Essential Requirements
  • Personal experience of breastfeeding a baby.
  • Experience of working or significant volunteering in either health, early years, social care, Small Step Big Changes (SSBC), or education setting in a skill mix team.
  • Experience of carrying out delegated work.
Qualifications
  • Educated to NVQ Level 2, or equivalent in a healthcare-related area, or relevant previous experience.
  • Good basic numeracy and literacy to GCSE level or equivalent.
