Strategic Legal Leader for Commercial Growth

Howdens Joinery Co., a leading trade kitchen supplier, is seeking a seasoned Head of Legal to drive strategic legal leadership and manage risk across the business. In this role, you will oversee key areas such as contract law, intellectual property, IT, data protection, marketing, M&A, ESG, and compliance, while leading the development of a small legal team. Based in either our Central London or Raunds, Northamptonshire office, you will be required to travel between both sites. Reporting to the Company Secretary, this is a great opportunity to influence senior leaders in a FTSE 100, decentralised business, ensuring legal and regulatory best practices are upheld. You will foster a culture that values legal considerations in business relationships and provide trusted guidance and support.
Key Responsibilities:- Leading the implementation of key initiatives and processes that align with the long-term interests of the business, driving efficiency, setting standards, and fostering a culture of integrity and responsibility across the UK, Ireland, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man.
- Playing a key role in managing the Group's legal risk register, offering innovative solutions, advising senior management on legal matters, and supporting crisis management where needed.
- Leading and developing a legal team of two people, overseeing workload organisation while ensuring the business is protected by identifying and mitigating legal risks.
- Providing proactive legal advice to all areas of the business, managing commercial contracts, and safeguarding intellectual property.
- Overseeing data protection, product-related risks, compliance with ESG legislation, and supporting M&A activities.
- Developing the legal budget, managing external relationships, and delivering cost-effective solutions will be critical. You will also support stakeholders with legal training, collaborate on business projects, and ensure compliance with internal governance and evolving legislation across various jurisdictions.
- 8 years plus of post-qualification experience (PQE) in company commercial matters, intellectual property, and data protection, preferably within an in-house legal team.
- Proven ability to influence senior management and lead by example, fostering a positive, collaborative team environment.
- Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to provide innovative legal solutions that support business growth and efficiency.
