About the Role

The Head of Indirect Tax plays a pivotal role in ASOS's Tax department, overseeing the management of indirect taxes and customs duties. This strategic position requires proactive management to ensure compliance in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to manage the indirect tax agenda, ensuring ongoing compliance with legislative changes, digitization requirements, and business changes.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Tax, Head of Customs Operations, and Head of Tax Transformation to implement an improved strategy for the management of Indirect Taxes, including planning and compliance for ASOS's exposures to Sales Taxes, VAT, Import Duties, Digital Taxes, and similar levies globally.
  • Monitor the impact of Indirect Taxes on ASOS's balance sheet and income statement, ensuring accurate accounting and regular balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Develop proactive solutions to reduce the working capital impact of Indirect Taxes, including successful interactions with business units in supply chain restructurings.
  • Lead indirect tax compliance, including making tax digital requirements, working with external consultants where required to ensure timely and accurate submission of relevant returns in all jurisdictions in which the group does business.
  • Lead ongoing external tax audits of applicable taxes in all relevant jurisdictions.
  • Maintain and enhance the indirect tax compliance and reporting processes within the financial reporting system; troubleshoot tax-related problems within the ERP and identify solutions for internal business partners.
  • Identify and implement indirect tax planning opportunities and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide ad hoc analysis/projects as requested by management.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience of indirect tax in consulting and/or industry, including international experience (ideally including EU and US).
  • ACA, ACCA, CTA, or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience of dealing with customs duties would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of financial and tax systems, including experience of implementing automation solutions and ensuring compliance with digitization requirements.
  • Understanding of new taxes and compliance requirements being introduced, including digital sales taxes, plastic taxes, digitization requirements, etc.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Team leadership and development experience.
  • Well-organized, good project management skills, and able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to manage and build relationships with stakeholders at all levels of management, as well as with tax and customs and other regulatory bodies.
  • Excellent communicator - ability to articulate complex concepts in a concise manner in both written and verbal presentations.
  • Someone who loves a challenge and is proactive in delivering value for the organization.
