Job Summary

The Pontprennau Medical Centre is seeking a skilled and experienced Healthcare Assistant to join our primary care team. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in supporting our General Practitioners (GPs) and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake new patient health checks, including height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse measurements.
  • Provide support to GPs by taking patient histories and baseline observations prior to consultations.
  • Carry out baseline observations, such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse rate, and record findings accurately.
  • Facilitate routine and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, advising patients accordingly.
  • Conduct BMI checks as directed and provide guidance on healthy weight management.
  • Act as a chaperone as required and provide emotional support to patients.
  • When trained, undertake venepuncture and ECGs as requested.
  • Signpost correspondence to relevant healthcare professionals, such as clinical pharmacists and practice nurses.
  • Extract relevant information from clinical letters, apply medical codes, and update patient records.
  • Support patients by arranging appointments, referrals, and follow-up appointments.
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients and provide clear instructions.
  • Support GPs in liaising with external agencies, such as arranging patient admissions.
  • Contribute to public health campaigns, including flu clinics, and participate in opportunistic health promotional programs.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, and effective working area at all times.
  • Order stock and supplies as required.
  • Attend and participate in regular team meetings and contribute to practice discussions.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Attend relevant annual updates and shared practice learning.
  • Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead.
  • Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.
  • Undertake any tasks consistent with the level of the post and the scope of the role, ensuring timely and effective delivery.

Person Specification

  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level.
  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Vaccination certification.
  • Experience of working in a primary care environment.
  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting.
  • Wound care and removal of sutures and staples.
  • ECGs.
  • Venepuncture.
  • New patient medicals, including height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse.
  • Chaperone procedure.
  • Ability to record accurate clinical notes.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Clear, polite telephone manner.
  • Effective time management (planning and organizing).
  • Ability to work as a team member and autonomously.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure.
