Job Overview

Islington Council is seeking a skilled Domestic Gas Engineer to join its in-house repairs and maintenance service. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of domestic gas appliances within the borough.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Completing annual landlord gas safety checks on approximately 10 properties in the north of the borough.
  • Carrying out responsive breakdown repairs and maintenance work on domestic gas systems and appliances.
  • Working as part of a contractual out-of-hours rota, including regular weekday evenings, weekends, and public/bank holidays.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Considerable proven post-qualification experience of servicing/repair and inspection of domestic gas appliances.
  • Current Gas Safe registration.
  • Qualifications: City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent and ACS Qualifications CCN1, CEN1, HTR1, Wat1, CHR1, CPA1.
  • Multi-skills training to a minimum of NVQ3 or a willingness to be trained when employed by Islington Council.
  • Detailed knowledge of gas ventilation, installation, and repair of domestic gas systems and appliances.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Detailed knowledge of health and safety legislation, codes of practice, and British Standards in relation to gas safety.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive awareness of good construction safety practices and the application of safe systems of work, including asbestos awareness, working at heights (including safe use of ladders, step ladders, and scaffolds).
  • Demonstrates the ability to organise own workload, appropriately prioritising, ordering necessary materials and plant, and working unsupervised for long periods of time, including outside of normal office hours where required.
  • Demonstrates a logical and methodical approach to problem-solving/fault diagnosis and demonstrates a suitable level of literacy and numeracy required to complete the various calculations, reports, and data entry relating to gas work.
  • Demonstrates the ability to verbally communicate with customers and colleagues, with the ability to answer customer queries clearly and concisely and maintaining constructive, effective working relationships with colleagues.
