Job Overview

The role of Senior Commercial Manager involves overseeing the commercial aspects of large-scale construction projects, ensuring they are set up and managed on a sound footing. This includes establishing productive relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Lead contract setup and commercial management to achieve all contract-related commercial goals.
  2. Manage change procedures in contracts and related projects, ensuring compliance with standards and coordination to maximize profit delivery.
  3. Coordinate, analyze, and assess supplier and subcontractor use to ensure appropriate service levels and revenues are delivered.
  4. Monitor project budgets to achieve cost and cash flow targets.
  5. Comply with UKPN Services guidelines, goals, and procedures, identifying and reporting areas of non-conformance.
  6. Making decisions and justifying them when challenged.
  7. Produce quality reports as specified within the contract on time, enhancing client understanding of added value.
  8. Provide counsel and challenge to the Client Delivery team, questioning commercial decisions and directions where necessary.
  9. Assess contractor applications for payment, making recommendations to raise payment.
  10. Collaborate with Project Managers and Engineers to ensure risks are identified and managed.
  11. Identify and secure growth opportunities, supporting project delivery teams in maintaining schedules of potential financial impacts for multiple projects.
  12. Advise others on applying different forms of contract.
  13. Support annual rate reviews.
  14. Create strategies for dispute resolution and prepare arguments to defend or pursue claims, recommending options to key UKPN Services third parties.
  15. Prepare and review Project Gate Papers to ensure a strong commercial case for initiating and continuing projects and proposals.
  16. Ensure form of contract, duration, scope of works, key personnel, and payment/application terms align with Head Contract terms and conditions.
  17. Establish commercial plans outlining internal and external reporting and notification processes.
  18. Lead or support establishing necessary contracts with suppliers, formalizing relationships, and procuring long-lead items.
  19. Active commercial management and attention to control costs, manage budgets, ensure sufficient cash flow, and address change events like variations or delays to meet or exceed profitability targets.
  20. Report commercial performance monthly via a Commercial Dashboard, including Original Order Value, Change Control & Variations, and Current Order Value.
  21. Lead commercial risk management for projects, recording and flagging commercial risks to the central finance team.
  22. Lead commercial closure of projects to conclude all financial and commercial matters and complete dealings with the client.
  23. Finalize cost reports and summaries of projects to agree on final accounts, understand overall commercial performance versus forecasts, and identify learning points to share best practice.
