Main Purpose of Job
The incumbent is responsible for the repair work, training, and supervision of inmates in the Refrigeration and HVAC trade at a correctional facility. This role involves performing maintenance and repair tasks, as well as supervising inmates in their work assignments.
Position Duties
A Correctional Maintenance Officer I - Refrigeration Mechanic is responsible for the custody, security, and supervision of adult inmates in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. This role involves working in a correctional facility, where employees are exposed to inmates who may be abusive and hostile, and have access to potentially dangerous tools and equipment.
Inmate Supervision
The incumbent is responsible for maintaining control and discipline among inmate workers, conducting searches for contraband items, and administering verbal or written disciplinary actions to inmates for any violations of conduct standards. The incumbent must also enforce safety, sanitary, custody, and security rules and regulations, and physically restrain inmates if necessary during fights or escape attempts.
Administrative Related Functions
The incumbent is responsible for estimating time, materials, and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks, ordering supplies and materials, and keeping records of supplies and materials used. The incumbent must also inventory materials on hand and tools in use.
Performance of Trade-Related Functions
The incumbent personally performs certain installation, maintenance, or repair tasks on refrigeration infrastructure, plans and implements appropriate procedures, operates hand and power tools and equipment needed, and maintains a record of time, supplies, and materials required. The incumbent must also escort third-party vendors and inspect completed work assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
The incumbent must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and two years of refrigeration mechanic experience. The incumbent must also be a U.S. citizen or resident alien, be at least 21 years of age, and pass a background investigation, oral interview, and physical examination.
Selection Process
Candidates must provide sufficient information on their application to show that they meet the qualifications for this recruitment. All information concerning qualifications must be submitted by the closing date, and the Maryland Correctional Training Commission will rank and place successful candidates on the eligible list for at least one year.
