Job Overview

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Radiation Therapist to join their team at the Sussex Cancer Centre. As a key member of the radiotherapy team, you will be responsible for providing professional radiotherapy services to patients, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the highest standards of care.

Main Duties
  • Plan, simulate, calculate, and treat cancer patients using advanced clinical knowledge of radiotherapy procedures, tissue tolerances, and physiological reactions due to radiation exposure.
  • Liaise effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless communication and coordination of care.
  • Use electronic imagers to confirm patient positioning at the start of radiotherapy courses and during treatment, ensuring accuracy and reproducibility.
  • Calculate the accuracy of patient position and use clinical judgment to adjust positioning, taking into account the contour of patients, progression, and regression of tumors.
  • Refer patients to clinicians for changes in calculation or re-planning as necessary.
  • Provide expert assessment to determine whether patients are fit for treatment and take appropriate action if unfit.
  • Make judgments when specialty support is required by other disciplines due to the nature of patients' problems and refer to dieticians and Macmillan teams as needed.
  • Arrange for blood and urine sampling and analyze results before treatment, continuing or suspending patient treatment accordingly.
  • Inform patients of highly sensitive results and refer to clinicians if treatment is suspended.
  • Permanent skin mark patients to ensure accurate and reproducible daily treatment set-up.
  • Use spatial awareness, visual precision, and manual dexterity to manipulate patients and equipment for optimal daily set-up, ensuring accurate and safe radiation beam delivery.
Person Specification
  • DCR[T] or BSc [Hons] in Therapeutic Radiography.
  • HCPC Registration.
  • Experience working with Elekta machines, Mosaiq, and within the NHS is desirable.
  • Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues and championing diversity in previous roles is essential.
