About the Role

As a Principal Civil Engineer at Jacobs, you will be part of our Nuclear Power and Engineering Technical Services (NPETS) business, which is currently undergoing an exciting phase of opportunity. Our team is supporting our key client's UK nuclear fleet through a business transformation, and we are also supporting new small modular reactor developers. Our work is varied, covering New Build, Generation, Life Extension, and Defueling, and our capabilities are in demand across the nuclear sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Working with integrated multi-disciplinary teams to deliver high-profile projects, managing programmes and resources, and delivering to time and budget.
  • Taking ownership of technical challenges, developing a strategy, and implementing the solution through engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Producing and reviewing design deliverables, including assumption notes, technical specifications, and calculation notes.
  • Directing resources to perform analysis tasks as necessary.
  • Developing and reviewing safety case inputs, such as Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs), Structural Design Method Statements (SDMSs), and Design Substantiation Reports (DSR).
  • Reviewing and justifying design decisions to the Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR).
  • Fulfilling and taking ownership of CDM responsibilities.
  • Supporting the preparation of fee proposals.
  • Developing client relationships to help grow the portfolio.

Requirements
  • MEng, MSc, BEng, or BSc in Civil Engineering or other relevant degree-level qualification.
  • Chartered with a relevant institution, such as the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).
  • Ability to work within, and where required, lead a design team, and also collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Good understanding of structural theory, with proven problem-solving ability.
  • Previous experience in the design and/or construction of civil engineering solutions using Eurocodes (and ideally American codes).
  • Demonstrable experience in the design of heavy infrastructure projects, nuclear, or regulated industry.
  • Experience using finite element modelling software and associated post-processing software, with experience in validation and verification of modelling tools and their outputs.
  • Understanding of the use of design tools within a BIM environment.
  • Problem solver who is able to offer solutions to challenges.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UK Nuclear Regulatory process in the field of civil engineering is extremely desirable.
  • ONR Generic Design Assessment experience is extremely desirable.
