Quantum Algorithms Scientist

Phasecraft is a pioneering quantum algorithms company, building the mathematical foundations for quantum computing applications that tackle real-world challenges. Founded in 2019 by Toby Cubitt, Ashley Montanaro, and John Morton, we are based in the UK, with a strong presence in London and Bristol.

We are seeking a highly skilled Quantum Algorithms Scientist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have expertise in the theory of optimization algorithms for gate-model quantum computers or a strong background in quantum algorithms, with a proven track record of contributing to this area. Their initial focus will be on developing theoretical and applied research for near-term quantum computing applications, with a focus on quantum algorithms and software for combinatorial optimization and constraint satisfaction problems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct theoretical and/or applied research and/or software development for near-term quantum computing applications, with an initial focus on quantum algorithms and software for combinatorial optimization and constraint satisfaction problems.
  • Collaborate with our team to author publications, presentations, patent applications, and other materials resulting from the research.
  • Work collaboratively in a small team made up of full-time staff and affiliated PhD students.
  • Other activities as required to support the growth and success of Phasecraft.
Requirements:
  • Expertise in one or more of: quantum information and/or computation theory, theory and/or implementation of classical algorithms for optimization or constraint satisfaction, quantum algorithm design and/or implementation, or mathematical analysis of algorithms.
  • Ability to work independently on research projects and to work in a team.
  • Flexibility to work across different aspects of quantum software and underpinning theory.
Desirable Criteria:
  • PhD (or soon to receive one) in quantum information, quantum computation theory, theoretical computer science, or a closely related field.
  • Coding experience in quantum software development environments (e.g. Cirq, QuEST, Qiskit).
  • Experience of implementing algorithms on quantum hardware.
  • Strong publication track-record in relevant discipline.
  • Software development skills.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and novel research.
  • Excellent communication skills.
