Job Description

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Digital Forensic Practitioner to join our team at HM Revenue and Customs. As a Digital Forensic Practitioner, you will play a critical role in supporting the successful delivery of HMRC enforcement through the forensic examination of digital media devices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the seizure and retention of digital devices within a laboratory environment and during search warrant executions for subsequent forensic examination.
  • Manage forensic exhibits to ensure continuity, confidentiality, and security are maintained at all times.
  • Understand, follow, and actively promote digital forensic good practice methodologies (ISO 17025:2017 standard and FSR Codes of Practice) to examine computers, mobile phones, and other digital devices.
  • Prepare evidential reports upon completion of digital forensic examinations.
  • Provide fact and procedural-based evidence at court as and when required.
  • Be at the forefront of technical developments within digital forensics.
  • Use a number of mainstream digital forensic software tools to process data from mobile devices or computers.
  • Work with material that may be of an obscene, offensive, or distressing nature.
  • Attend operational duties, including search warrant executions away from normal place of work with overnight stays.

Requirements

  • National Security Vetting Clearance at Security Check (SC) or the ability to achieve SC clearance.
  • Possess a passion for technology that goes beyond that of a regular user.
  • Be practical and pragmatic with a problem-solving mindset and an eye for precision and detail.
  • Be comfortable handling tools in order to dismantle and examine computers, mobile phones, and other technology while following documented procedures.
  • Be an excellent team player, able to work effectively with others.
  • Have a strong desire for self-improvement and be willing to learn new and evolving skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Degree in Digital Forensics, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Benefits

As a Digital Forensic Practitioner at HMRC, you will have access to a range of benefits, including:

  • A competitive salary of £32,782.
  • A generous leave allowance, starting at 25 days and increasing by a day for every year of qualifying service up to a maximum of 30 days.
  • Pension contributions of at least 27% of salary.
  • Family-friendly policies.
  • Personal support.
  • Coaching and development opportunities.

Working Arrangements

We operate a flexible working policy, allowing you to balance your work and personal commitments. We welcome applications from those who need to work a more flexible arrangement and will agree to requests where possible, considering our operational and customer service needs.

Security Clearance

This role requires security clearance to SC. Any job offer is conditional to the attainment of the security clearance to SC and thus, the security clearance is mandatory. Please be aware that those who do not attain the required security clearance will not be allowed to carry on in this particular post.

Occupational Health Assessment

This role requires a certain degree of fitness, and applicants will be required to be cleared by an Occupational Health assessment to be able to attend a Public and Personal Safety Training (PPST) course. Successful completion of the PPST is required to undertake duties away from the office. Failure to pass and maintain the PPST certificate may affect receipt of the Flexibility Payment.

Flexibility Payment

This post attracts a Level 1a Flexibility Payment (FP) combined with a bespoke FP package of 90 additional hours, which are paid monthly. The FP allows HMRC flexibility to change your work pattern, at short notice, to meet business needs. Additionally, you will be expected to work additional hours, potentially on weekends and outside your normal working hours/days (including bank holidays).

Integrity Declaration

All applicants will be required to declare any past convictions, criminal findings, or police cautions, regardless of whether they are 'spent'. You must also declare any disciplinary proceedings relating to previous employments. The disclosure of this information will not automatically disbar you from employment with FIS, but we need to be aware of any event or issue which could impinge on your credibility if questioned in court.

Behaviours

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Working Together
  • Delivering at Pace
  • Making Effective Decisions
