Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Operator to join our team at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). As a key member of our highway maintenance team, you will be responsible for operating heavy equipment, performing manual labor, and responding to emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment, including dump trucks, loaders, and graders, to maintain and repair highways and roads.
  • Perform manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, and patching potholes.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including snow removal and accident response.
  • Participate in work zone training and prepare work zones for traffic control.
  • Identify and report workplace safety hazards and maintain current knowledge of safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience in equipment operation comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

Additional Considerations

  • Valid CDL or CDL Learner's Permit.
  • Experience with heavy manual labor and heavy equipment operation.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident response and clean-up.
  • Experience operating a dump truck.
