Duration: 6 months with possible extension

Salary: £15.97 per hour

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Scientific Officer to join our team in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. As a Scientific Officer, you will be responsible for assisting in identifying water quality pressures within the Lough Neagh catchment area.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Conduct site inspections at industrial and agricultural premises to identify potential water quality issues.
  • Collect and analyze biological and chemical samples to assess water quality.
  • Present findings to team members and other stakeholders.
  • Assist in data processing and analysis to identify localized pressures and appropriate actions.
  • Support duties to assist NIEA and Council water quality field staff.
  • Assist in providing advice to and administering DAERA funded community projects to improve the water environment.
  • Regular checks and audit of NIEA vehicles.
  • Driving NIEA vehicles from a vehicle pool to collect samples from pre-agreed sites.

Requirements:

  • GCE/GCSE O levels grades A-C in English Language, Mathematics and Double Award Science or 2 science subjects to include chemistry, biology, physics, geography.
  • Hold a full Category B driving licence valid for NI.

Desired Criteria:

  • A-level Earth Science subjects would be an advantage.
  • A relevant science degree would be an advantage.
  • A knowledge of GIS, Excel and database use would be an advantage.
  • Experience in undertaking site inspections/audits would be an advantage.
  • Experience in working in a regulatory environment would be an advantage.
