Manchester, United Kingdom Northern Full time

About Northern

Connecting millions of people and communities across the North is our mission. We're improving rail travel, enhancing the experience on board and at stations. Our customers are at the heart of our business as we improve performance and create a better way to go.

We're committed to being an equal opportunities employer and a promoter of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. We encourage and welcome applications from candidates with diverse backgrounds, regardless of gender, sex, ethnicity, race, religion, education, socioeconomic background, disability, or sexual orientation.

We hold Disability Confident status, which means we're dedicated to making the most of the talents that disabled people can bring to the workplace.

The Role

We're seeking a seasoned leader to oversee our company-wide compliance with Northern's service contract and transformation agenda. This pivotal position involves closely monitoring our complex contractual agreements and service contract to ensure alignment with strategic goals and managing our relationship with our client.

In this role, you'll have a unique cross-functional oversight, enabling you to identify and address key strategic issues that impact the overall business plan. You'll establish and manage robust tracking processes to prevent non-compliance. You will ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act, balancing the need for transparency with the protection of our commercial interests where applicable. This is a critical opportunity to influence and drive compliance excellence across the organisation.

  • Lead Northern's relationship with Rail North Partnership, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations to avoid any breaches and maintain robust business-wide adherence.
  • Build and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, delivering excellent customer service and account management to Rail North Partnership and wider stakeholders.
  • Oversee Freedom of Information processes, providing sign-off on responses and liaising with the Information Commissioner's Office when needed.
  • Guide discussions on service contract renewal/development, ensuring Directors and internal teams understand resource needs for evaluating and responding to requirements.
  • Lead compliance monitoring, identifying risks and revenue opportunities, while managing the Compliance Managers and Information Officer.

About You:

  • You'll possess expert specialist knowledge of complex commercial contracts in a highly regulated environment.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to produce high-quality reports on behalf of the Director team.
  • Legal knowledge is desirable, with the ability to critique and evaluate the legalities of complex documents.
  • Knowledge of the rail industry is beneficial but essential is the ability to quickly absorb and digest new and complex information.

Your Benefits

We value our people and reward hard work, offering a comprehensive benefits package. As a result, you'll be able to make the most of:

  • Free Travel on Northern services - everyone who works at Northern, plus their partners/spouses and dependents, can travel for free right across our full network of services.
  • Defined Benefit Pension Scheme - you'll rarely find a pension as good as a Northern pension, and we top up your pension with a generous 1% contribution.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme - save up to 42% on the cost of a bike, while also spreading your payments throughout the year.
  • Maternity and Paternity Benefits - we go above and beyond the standard, and mums can enjoy 9 months' maternity leave on full pay while dads can make the most of 2 weeks' paternity leave on full pay.
  • Exclusive benefits with Northern Perks - enjoy retail discounts, instant vouchers, cashback, wellbeing support, and much more.
  • Holiday Purchase Scheme - if you join us at Manager or Executive level or above, you can use your salary to buy up to 5 additional days of annual leave each year.

Salary: £56,512 to £69,752 per annum
