Job Description

Perth and Kinross Council is seeking a skilled Benefits Assessor to join their Revenues and Benefits service. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for the administration, assessment, and communication of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction awards.

Main Duties:
  • Administer, assess, and calculate Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction entitlement in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Prioritize tasks to ensure accurate decisions are made within timescales, preventing financial hardship.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve the best outcome for customers.
  • Communicate with customers regarding decisions, outcomes, and reasoning using various methods.
  • Provide a service that is considerate of confidentiality and handle sensitive information with dignity and respect.
  • Accurately manage records, notes, and files to ensure compliance with legislation and audit requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external customers to ensure customers receive support, guidance, and advice from other services.
Requirements:
  • Excellent prioritization and organization skills to manage a workload with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
  • Capacity to interpret legislation and effectively communicate decisions.
  • Attention to detail and arithmetical skills to ensure accurate decisions and payment of public funds.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the wider welfare system.
  • Customer-focused approach with excellent communication skills.
  • Sensitivity when handling information, maintaining confidentiality, and supporting customers with dignity and respect.
  • Positive approach and willingness to contribute to the continuous improvement of service provision.
  • Ability to work with others to ensure customers receive the right help, support, and advice.
  • Openness to enhancing skills and playing an active role in personal development.
  • Excellent IT skills with a good working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Good knowledge of Local Government services and purpose.
