About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Craftsperson (Mechanical) to join our Estates and Campus Services team at the University of Essex. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing our plumbing and HVAC systems, ensuring they operate efficiently and effectively.

The ideal candidate will have a strong mechanical background, with experience in plumbing, drainage, and HVAC maintenance. You will have achieved an industry-recognised qualification (NVQ Level 2 or equivalent) and be able to work both individually and as part of a team. You will be comfortable dealing with difficult situations and maintaining a professional and positive attitude.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install new plant, equipment, and services
  • Carry out planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) programme of works on all plumbing and HVAC systems
  • Work to manuals, instructions, drawings, and specifications without direct supervision
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Be willing to learn new methods of working and show flexibility where required
Working Arrangements

The post holder will be expected to work on a rota basis, covering 36 hours per week over a shift system of 7am – 7pm. Weekend working is expected to be 1 weekend in 6, with flexibility required. The post holder will also be expected to cover the 'on-call' rota, responding to out of hours emergencies, which is anticipated to be 1 week in 12.
