Azenta Life Sciences is a leading provider of robotic compound management and biological sample storage systems. Our team is focused on ensuring the long-term integrity of our customers' samples and data, transforming the productivity and streamlining the workflow of scientists across various life science applications.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will work with a small team of mechanical design engineers on project-specific design and product configuration work. This includes assembly and detail component design, generation of BOMs, and design substantiation. The engineer will work with cross-functional teams to meet customer requirements and timescales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake design of assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components using Solidworks 3D CAD systems.
  • Ensure designs are robust by using techniques such as FMEA, design review, DFM, and DFS.
  • Drive repeatability and standardization into custom stores projects by utilizing equipment and sub-systems that are already developed and proven.
  • Translate requirements for sub-systems into design solutions based on specifications from customers, lead engineers, or line managers.
  • Work with the design team to identify, analyze, and resolve project difficulties before they arise.
  • Cooperate closely with other functions in the Hardware design team, including Electrical Design, Refrigeration, and Systems Engineering.
  • Apply a 'standard operations' approach to the design process and work with the team lead to reinforce and further develop company practices.
  • Stay up-to-date on technical advances in the discipline and related fields.

Requirements

  • Knowledgeable in the use of 3D CAD modeling (Solidworks preferred), PLM systems (Agile preferred), and the use of this technology to improve design quality and efficiency.
  • Direct experience of documenting design and providing calculations.
  • Experience of design for CE technical construction files is desirable.

Person Specification

  • Graduate or HNC (engineering, manufacturing, or similar) with 5 to 10 years of mechanical system design experience.
  • Familiar with automation design, including motors, gearboxes, bearings, and positional accuracy.
  • Can detail design components, add dimensions and tolerances, and perform tolerance stack calculations.
  • Can design assemblies, including generation of assembly drawings and BOMs.
  • Can communicate clearly with colleagues regarding design intent, assessment of various design options, and problem resolution.
  • Can work with Operations and Test teams during build and testing phases.
  • Has worked with PLM systems and understands routing and approval of design documents (drawings, CAD models, calculations, etc.).
  • Direct experience of generating design calculations.
  • Must be able to use SolidWorks 3D CAD systems.
  • Can use Agile PLM systems preferred.
  • Must be able to use MS Office tools.
  • Must be able to use MS Teams (including video conferencing).
