The Role

As a Chargehand, you will be responsible for the day-to-day activities related to mechanical and engineering team servicing and maintaining the fleet of vehicles. You will be an essential link to the Fleet maintenance manager, ensuring the efficiency of the workshop.

Your Responsibilities

  1. Monitor the daily running of the depot and all engineering staff, supervising in the absence of the Workshop Planner and Engineering Supervisor.
  2. Take the lead on shift with all IT systems, supporting all staff and ensuring all diagnostic equipment is operational.
  3. Carry out in-process checks on staff to ensure quality and company policies are being adhered to.
  4. Perform repairs and diagnosis on vehicles as required.
  5. Comply with all HS&E legislation and First Group policies.
  6. Provide guidance to other staff as required.
  7. Allocate planned and unplanned work to engineering staff.
  8. Manage labour overtime in line with set authorisation limits, as set by Engineering Manager.
  9. Update the engineering vehicle status board and daily garage log to reflect any changes.
  10. Liaise with the operations department to deal with changeovers and breakdowns in the most effective way to minimise lost mileage.
  11. In the absence of the Cleaning Supervisor, manage vehicle cleaning, fuelling, oil checks, and parking.
  12. Process vehicle defect cards in line with engineering standard operating procedures.
  13. Take digital photographs of any vehicle involved in a third-party incident, in line with engineering standard operating procedures as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum level 3 NVQ standard or equivalent (i.e., City & Guilds level 1 & 2) in a relevant Vehicle Repair subject across either HGV/LGV, car, or van.
  • Fully conversant with the safe operation of workshop equipment.
  • Very experienced with IT systems, diagnostics, etc.
  • Must hold a full PCV licence and forklift truck licence if required.
  • Full driving licence.
