Job Role Summary
GB Railfreight is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Train Driver to join their team. As a Train Driver, you will be responsible for operating locomotives and freight trains safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Locomotives: You will be responsible for operating both light engines and freight trains, ensuring safety is at the forefront of all actions.
- Comply with Rules and Instructions: You will need to comply with all rules and instructions, undergoing proficiency assessments to maintain competence.
- Complete Route and Traction Training: You will need to complete route and traction training, maintaining competence as required.
- Locate and Rectify Faults: You will need to locate and where possible rectify faults by following the correct reporting procedures.
- Represent the Company: You will represent the company to our customers, maintaining a professional outlook in both behaviour and appearance.
- Read and Understand Notices: You will need to read and fully understand all notices and amendments affecting the locomotive, train or route the Train Manager is working.
- Communicate Issues: You will need to communicate issues pro-actively and effectively with GB Railfreight controllers, line managers, signallers and customer representatives.
- Ensure Safety: You will need to ensure safety of ones self and all others working in and around the Railway by remaining focused, vigilant and taking the correct measures to prepare for duty.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- European Train Driving License: You will need to hold a European Train Driving License.
- Clean Safety Record: You will need to have a clean safety record.
- Freight Train Driver Competence: You will need to have Freight Train Driver Competence.
- Excellent Communication Skills: You will need to have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Rail Industry Knowledge: You will need to have a thorough knowledge and understanding of rail industry rules and regulations.
- Full, Manual UK Driver's Licence: You will need to hold a full, manual UK driver's licence.
- Residency: You will need to live within 45 minutes commute of the depot.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- iPAD and Digital Technologies: You will need to be comfortable using iPAD and digital technologies.
- Mentor Experience: You will need to have mentor experience.
- Freight Train Experience: You will need to have experience of freight train operation, especially class 66 locomotive competence.
- Varied Route Knowledge: You will need to have varied route knowledge.
- Rail Operator Competence: You will need to have rail operator competence.

- Excellent Interpersonal Skills: You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
- Passion for Health, Safety and Standards: You will need to have passion for health, safety and standards.
- Ability to Remain Calm: You will need to have the ability to remain calm in a pressured environment, systematically appraising the situation and taking appropriate action.
- Flexible Approach: You will need to have a flexible approach to work, willingness to go above and beyond for the fulfilment of duties.
- Ability to Work Alone and as Part of a Team: You will need to have the ability to work both alone and as part of a team.
- No Preference for Avoiding a Monotonous Environment: You will need to have no preference for avoiding a monotonous environment.
