Key Responsibilities

  • Develop features and improvements to our applications using Java, Spring Boot, and other relevant technologies.
  • Collaborate with internal contacts and teams to find solutions to complex problems.
  • Take ownership of key technical decisions and project delivery.
  • Balance new deliveries against technical debt and find the right timing for the two.
  • Ensure delivery quality, including meeting security standards and providing for future extensibility of the codebase.
  • Communicate with stakeholders and third parties to understand their needs and how they link together.
  • Investigate and promote the latest emergent technologies and find opportunities to attach them to the business roadmap in ways that benefit both the business and the tech function.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced engineers to help them develop their technical skills.

Requirements

  • Extensive commercial experience of writing applications with Java, Spring Boot, and Kafka.
  • Lead on technically complex projects where you have assigned work to multiple engineers.
  • Strong coordination and collaboration skills.
  • Great problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with TDD practices and the ability to debate the pros and cons of left-shifting in the pipeline.
  • Ability to debate the merits of different solutions and discuss where to trim a solution or requirements in order to balance business OKRs against technical OKRs.
  • Keen interest in the performance of live applications and how our users use them.
  • Previous experience of bringing new technologies or frameworks to their teams and taking initiative to improve the way the team works.
  • Ability to share knowledge with the rest of the product development team.
  • Willingness to ask questions and use the experience of those around them.
  • Sense of ownership and responsibility for the work you and your team deliver.
  • Recognition of an environment of social and psychological safety and understanding of how to help create this in a team that is responsible for delivering high-quality software and impactful projects.
