Job Summary

The Ministry of Defence seeks a highly skilled and experienced individual to fill the role of Chief Scientific Adviser. As the principal adviser to MOD Ministers and senior officials, the successful candidate will provide expert scientific advice and analysis on all aspects of science and technology in the MOD.

This is a pivotal role that requires the ability to exercise influence over the future trajectory of Defence, including through the provision of delegated authority for S&T in MOD. The Chief Scientific Adviser will support decisions on military operations, future equipment acquisition, and assist in the delivery of future battle-winning technologies.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring objective analysis of the Department's investment programme and of defence-related risks across a broad scope of science, engineering, analytical, and technology subjects. This will involve bringing together specialised defence areas of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and missile defence, and promoting technology-led modernisation across a range of areas including autonomous systems, cyber deterrence, artificial intelligence, big data, space technology, and synthetic environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert scientific advice and analysis to MOD Ministers and senior officials
  • Exercise delegated authority for S&T in MOD
  • Support decisions on military operations and future equipment acquisition
  • Assist in the delivery of future battle-winning technologies
  • Ensure objective analysis of the Department's investment programme and defence-related risks
  • Bring together specialised defence areas of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and missile defence

Requirements

The successful candidate will have a strong background in science and technology, with experience in providing expert advice and analysis to senior officials. They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders.
