Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Education Assistant to join our team at Danbury Public Schools. As an integral member of the instructional team, you will provide essential support to individual students participating in the English Language Learners (ELL) Program. Your role will involve working closely with certified teachers to reinforce learning, record student progress, and assist with lesson planning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning and skills introduced by certified teachers.
  • Record student achievements and diagnostic tests under the direction of certified teachers.
  • Assist certified teachers in devising learning experiences tailored to individual students' language developmental levels.
  • May work in a particular classroom assignment or rotate through various classrooms based on programmatic needs.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, and other non-classroom activities.
  • Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by certified teachers.
  • Serve as the chief source of information and support for substitute teachers in the absence of regular teachers.
  • Assist certified teachers in drill work, large group reading, or storytelling.
  • Exhibit a clear understanding of techniques and strategies for working with ELL students and apply them as needed.
  • Alert certified teachers to any problems or special information related to individual students.
  • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and sensitivity to student information as expected of certified teachers.
  • Participate in professional development training programs as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the Director of ESL and World Languages.
  • Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set and assigned by certified teachers.
  • Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction as needed.
  • Assist in maintaining a well-organized and smoothly functioning school environment.
  • Assist certified teachers in maintaining appropriate documentation as required by federal law on ELLs.
  • Work with students in small groups or individually to master concepts and vocabulary in the target language.
  • Approach student proficiency in English with patience and support.

Requirements:
  • Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to work productively with children.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Must exhibit good judgment, patience, tact, and courtesy.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position, particularly when assigned to kindergarten positions.
  • Exhibits proficiency in basic reading, math, writing, and speaking English and preferably Spanish.
  • Preference given to individuals who are fluent in Spanish or other targeted languages, based on openings.
  • Utilizes and maintains ethical practices for confidential communication about students.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must possess a high school diploma.
  • Must meet NCLB compliance requirements, as applicable. Candidates must possess an Associate's Degree or 60 college credits OR successful completion of the Parapro Assessment Examination.
  • Must possess or be willing to acquire the skills necessary to support needs associated with English language learners.
  • Experience/training in working with children preferred.

Language Skills:
Bilingual (English/Spanish or Portuguese)

Working Conditions:
Full-time, 32.5 hours per week and benefits as per Union Contract with benefits
