About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join our team at Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. As a Locum Adult Psychiatry Consultant, you will be working within the South Camden Core Community Mental Health Team, providing expert advice and support to GPs and other practice staff regarding the assessment and management of mental health difficulties of patients registered with their practices.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and support to GPs and other practice staff regarding the assessment and management of mental health difficulties of patients registered with their practices.
  • Assist with diagnosis, formulation, medication reviews, management plans, risk assessments, crisis plans, and self-help plans as required for patients referred to the team.
  • Maintain effective communication with GPs, primary care staff, patients, and their carers.
  • Work flexibly within timetabled working hours to prioritize urgent clinical matters.
  • Carry out Mental Health Act and domiciliary assessments as required.
  • Play a key role in implementing improved linkage between primary and secondary care services.
  • Liaise and work closely with local IAPT services and other primary care providers to provide a joined-up primary care mental health service.
  • Engage with local service user participation models.
  • Participate in management activities and governance processes related to the Practice-Based Mental Health service, including audits and quality improvement projects.

Person Specification

We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist with the following qualifications and experience:

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry.
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility) - qualifies to act as a Responsible Clinician.
  • Registered with the Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing.
  • Shared Services training up to date to be an approved trainer/clinical supervisor.
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training.
  • Training as a Consultant mentor.

Knowledge and Experience

We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist with the following knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Experience in the assessment of complex clinical cases involving severe and enduring mental illness and significant risk histories.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and safeguarding practices.
  • Experience in developing policies and protocols.
  • Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training, and multi-professional staff.
  • Ability to take on the role and responsibilities of the clinical lead.
  • A special interest or willingness to develop one in an area that helps to meet the needs of the Trust.
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents, and handling complaints.
  • Experience in successfully delivering research projects.
