About the Role

The Oral Health Improvement Service is a commissioned service within the Dental Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. As an Oral Health Improvement Specialist, you will contribute to the planning and delivery of evidence-based oral health interventions to reduce inequalities in oral health across Birmingham.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work within a team to plan and deliver oral health improvement programmes, training, and events.
  • Manage own workload and work to tight timescales.
  • Contribute to the evaluation of oral health improvement programmes.

We deliver over 100 clinical services, including community nursing, specialist healthcare, and dental services.

Requirements

  • General Dental Council registration.
  • Certificate of the Examining Board of Dental Nurses (or equivalent).
  • Certificate in Oral Health Promotion (or equivalent Diploma/BTEC Level 4 professional qualification).
  • A Diploma or BSc in Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Award in Education and Training (or equivalent Diploma/BTEC Level 3).
  • Relevant experience of planning and delivering oral health improvement programmes, training, and events.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Knowledge of aetiology and prevention of dental diseases.
  • Good understanding of health improvement principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of epidemiology and deprivation data to identify target groups.
  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively using verbal and written skills.

Personal Qualities

  • A strong commitment to a social model of health for reducing oral health inequalities.
  • Ability to motivate and influence others.
  • Confidence to use initiative and make decisions.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to manage conflict in a sensitive and assertive manner.
  • Concentration required when evaluating interventions, undertaking audits, writing briefings, or reports.
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the role.
