Job Overview
An exciting opportunity exists for a Head Orthoptist to manage the day-to-day operations of the Orthoptic service in the department. This role involves strategic planning, development, and delivery of a high-quality Orthoptic service in line with the department's overall objectives and strategy.
As a lead, you will be responsible for managing a team of Allied Health Professionals (AHPs), including orthoptists and optometrists. This involves tasks such as recording and reporting sickness, absence, and annual leave, as well as managing training programs and maintaining competencies.
Additional responsibilities include providing training, supervision, and assessment of undergraduate and postgraduate orthoptists, and providing an Orthoptic service as an autonomous practitioner. This involves assessing, diagnosing, planning management, and supervising treatment of orthoptic patients.
Key duties of the job include providing high-quality Orthoptic services as an autonomous practitioner and managing own clinical workload. This includes clinics such as Orthoptic-led follow-up clinics, joint Orthoptic and neuro-ophthalmology clinics, paediatric clinics, ophthalmologist/optometrist clinics, eye casualty, and visual fields.
The role also involves taking part in extended roles within ophthalmology using the Ophthalmic Practitioner Training (OPT) program. You will assess, diagnose, treat, and manage patients referred to the Orthoptic service, including those with paediatric visual disorders, ocular motility disorders, neuro-ophthalmology, and other ophthalmic conditions.
You will also take on a managerial role as lead orthoptist for fellow colleagues, junior orthoptists, and optometrists, including managing sickness absence and reorganizing workload according to clinical priority of patient needs. You will also deal with any issues or complaints that may arise and lead orthoptic staff meetings.
Desirable skills for this post include the ability to speak Welsh, and English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Working for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board offers a dynamic and supportive environment where you can develop your skills and contribute to the delivery of high-quality healthcare services.
