Geospatial AI Research Scientist

To make a significant contribution to the advancement of geospatial data science research at the University of Glasgow, the successful candidate will work closely with Professor Ana Basiri and the Geospatial Data Science Group. The researcher will be responsible for developing cutting-edge geospatial AI tools, delivering high-impact research outputs, and supervising PhD and MSc students.
Main Duties and Responsibilities- Develop innovative GeoAI solutions by integrating geospatial data with OpenAI's and/or similar API offerings to automate data processing, generate insights, and develop AI-driven geospatial applications.
- Study and develop applications using existing Large Language Models through fine-tuning, information retrieval, and integration into wider software projects.
- Study and use relevant techniques including prompt engineering, data ingest and transformation techniques.
- Collaborate with the Geospatial Data Science Team at the University of Glasgow and external partners to advance research and development.
- Maintain and enhance research profile and reputation, including contributing to publications in high-profile journals and gathering indicators of esteem.
- Presentation of work at international and national conferences, seminars, and workshops to develop and enhance research profile.
- Support FAIR principles by making data and code repositories available and reproducible, writing blogs, and drafting technical reports.
- Engage in personal, professional, and career development to enhance specialist and transferable skills.
Essential:
- A PhD in a relevant academic/research discipline, with experience of personal development in computer science or similar disciplines.
- Extensive knowledge of AI foundations, including prompt engineering, data ingest and transformation techniques, and fine-tuning models.
- Deep understanding of OpenAI's and/or similar API offerings, and how to leverage these tools for geospatial data tasks.
Desirable:
- Experience with collaborating with or working at international academic environments of the highest national or international quality.
- Experience with identifying and developing funding applications.
- Support of less experienced members of the project team.
This post is full-time, with funding for up to 2 years. Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum. The University of Glasgow has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
