The Science Directorate delivers high-quality, impactful, and relevant multidisciplinary science. Our people are diverse, talented, and committed to delivering innovative outcomes.

This role is part of the Bacteriology department, where you will work on a wide range of projects, including field investigations, bacterial identification, typing, and characterization. You will be responsible for providing scientific technical expertise and working with various stakeholders, including government organizations, veterinary customers, and academia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Culture of different organisms on specialist media from various biological samples.
  • Phenotypic tests, including serological identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Assistance with sample collection from farm animal premises, feed mills, and abattoirs.
  • Production and standardization of reagents for surveillance projects and international trade assays.
  • Molecular tests, including antimicrobial resistance gene detection and 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
  • Basic immunology, including cell counting and immunoassay of cytokines.
  • Speciation of bacteria by biochemical, genetic, and MALDI-ToF approaches.
  • Presentation of data in tabular or graphical formats for reports and papers.

Requirements

  • Basic microbiology and/or immunology knowledge.
  • Experience in using computer software, including Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to organize own work and time.
  • An interest in the food animal production sector.

Qualifications

A levels or equivalent in science-related subjects are required.
