Job Summary

GE Aviation's Power Conversion business is seeking a skilled Power Electronics Engineer to lead and perform low-voltage and medium-voltage power electronics and electrical design tasks on Drive System projects. As a key member of a multi-disciplinary team, you will be responsible for specifying, designing, and supporting the manufacturing and validation of MW-scale power electronics for Marine, Energy, and Industry applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical and mechanical design of power, control, and cooling systems by specifying, designing, and documenting power electronics converter technical solutions to meet specific application requirements.
  • Undertake all aspects of power electronics circuits design, snubber design, gating electronics design, thermal design, and electrical design, requiring semiconductor device domain knowledge (Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCT, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN, etc).
  • Develop system-level understanding for fault-level study and protection strategy.
  • Produce schematics with Eplan (or equivalent) for circuits.
  • Manage bill of material BOMs for all assemblies, maintaining control with change management process.
  • Maintain requirements, understanding, and delivering against FMEA and lesson learnt.
  • Verify, validate, and test low-voltage and medium-voltage power electronic systems, drives/converters/inverters of MW-range power systems, including power electronic inverter full-temperature heat run test, EMC, overload, abnormal testing conditions, and performance evaluation and optimisation.
  • Ensure power electronic system designs comply with relevant health and safety, international standards, and class society rules.
  • Apply engineering standards and develop design practices.
  • Support attainment of on-time delivery, cost, and quality targets on projects.
  • Provide technical assistance to tendering, test, and commissioning teams.
  • Liaise with customers, suppliers, and sub-contractors.
Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree, master's or PhD degree in power electronics is desirable.
  • Knowledge of power electronic converter control systems design and analysis.
  • Knowledge of power electronics converter design and electrical machines control methods is desirable.
  • Good semiconductor device domain knowledge and their associated gating electronics & snubber circuits design and thermal design.
  • Willing to travel within the UK and overseas for short-term working.
  • Able to achieve UK security clearance.
  • Undertake modelling, analysis, and simulation of power electronic converter systems, using standard industrial design tools such as: Matlab, Simulink, PLECS, PSpice, Mathcad, CFD, etc. (Desired)
  • Ability to multi-task on a variety of projects, adapts to changing circumstances, able to deal with ambiguity making positive use of the opportunities it presents. (Desired)
  • Able to make prompt, clear decisions. Probes for further information or greater understanding of a problem and produces workable solutions. (Desired)
  • Excellent communication skills; listens, consults others, and communicates proactively. (Desired)
  • Strong report writing skills; writes clearly and succinctly to meet the needs and understanding of the intended audience. (Desired)
  • SAP and Teamcenter (PLM) experience. (Desired)
