Research Scientist in Molecular Microbiology

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Scientist to join our team at The University of Manchester. As a Research Scientist in Molecular Microbiology, you will be working at the intersection of evolutionary, molecular, micro and synthetic biology to address questions about bacterial transcriptional regulation and antimicrobial resistance.
Our team designs synthetic genetic systems in bacteria to ask fundamental and applied questions about diverse topics, including the evolution of multidrug resistance, regulation of multi-drug efflux pumps, evolution of bacterial promoters and transcription factors, and transcriptional crosstalk between plasmids and bacterial hosts. We use Escherichia coli as a model system.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Designing and conducting experiments to investigate the evolution of bacterial transcriptional regulation and antimicrobial resistance
- Developing and implementing synthetic genetic systems in bacteria to study complex biological processes
- Collaborating with colleagues to analyze and interpret data, and to develop new research ideas
- Communicating research findings through publications and presentations
Requirements:
- PhD in a relevant biological science subject, such as molecular microbiology, synthetic biology, or evolutionary biology
- Experience in molecular microbiology and/or experimental evolution, including manipulating knockout libraries and working with clinically isolated plasmids
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design and conduct experiments and analyze data
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate with colleagues and communicate research findings to a variety of audiences
