Solar Energy Technician Job Description

At Unreal Gigs, we're seeking a skilled Solar Energy Technician to join our team. As a key member of our renewable energy team, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the successful installation and maintenance of photovoltaic systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Install Solar Power Systems: Install photovoltaic (PV) systems on rooftops, ground mounts, or other structures, handling everything from mounting panels and wiring to configuring inverters and ensuring proper system setup for optimal power generation.
  2. Conduct Site Assessments and Prepare for Installation: Perform site assessments to determine the feasibility of solar installations, including evaluating roof or ground suitability, measuring system dimensions, and assessing shading or other obstructions.
  3. Maintain and Troubleshoot Solar Systems: Conduct regular maintenance checks on solar panels, inverters, and wiring to ensure that systems are running efficiently, and troubleshoot and resolve issues such as shading problems, electrical faults, or damaged equipment.
  4. Monitor System Performance and Optimize Output: Use monitoring tools to assess system performance and track energy production, analyzing system data to detect underperformance and implement solutions to maximize energy output and efficiency.
  5. Ensure Compliance with Safety Standards: Follow strict safety protocols and industry standards for solar installations, including NEC (National Electrical Code) requirements, ensuring that all installations meet regulatory and safety standards to protect both the technician and the client.
  6. Educate Clients on Solar System Operation: Provide clients with guidance on how to use, monitor, and maintain their solar power systems, explaining energy-saving tips, monitoring methods, and basic troubleshooting to help clients get the most out of their solar investment.
  7. Document Work and Maintain Accurate Records: Keep detailed records of installations, maintenance, and repairs performed, documenting system specifications, performance data, and maintenance activities to support warranty claims, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance.
Requirements:
  • Solar Installation and Maintenance Expertise: Strong experience with PV system installations, maintenance, and troubleshooting, with a solid understanding of solar system components, including panels, inverters, batteries, and wiring configurations.
  • Electrical and Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in electrical systems and wiring, with knowledge of the NEC and local electrical codes, and the ability to use tools and equipment essential for safe and effective solar installations.
  • Problem-Solving and Troubleshooting: Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and repair solar system issues, assessing problems quickly and finding effective solutions to restore system performance.
  • Attention to Detail and Safety Compliance: Meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to safety, understanding the risks involved in solar installations and adhering to safety protocols to ensure safe operations.
  • Customer Service and Communication Skills: Excellent communication skills with the ability to educate clients on system operation and provide clear answers to questions, explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Education and Experience:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required, with an associate degree or certification in solar energy technology, electrical technology, or a related field highly valued.
  • Experience: 2+ years of experience in solar installation, maintenance, or electrical work, with hands-on experience installing and maintaining photovoltaic systems, and experience with solar monitoring systems and inverter troubleshooting desirable.
