About the Role

We are seeking an Applied Scientist to join our Technology Development Group within the Physics sub-function. The successful candidate will undertake research and development on diagnostics for hydrodynamics trials, working in the laboratory to develop new techniques and diagnostics, undertake data analysis, and keep up to date with scientific literature.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct research and development on diagnostics for hydrodynamics trials
  • Develop new techniques and diagnostics in the laboratory
  • Undertake data analysis and keep up to date with scientific literature
  • Work on cutting-edge R&D and apply it to explosive experiments
  • Occasional travel within the UK and overseas to attend conferences and participate in experiments
Requirements
  • A strong degree in Physics or a related subject with a focus on applied science, or relevant experience in the field of optics or photonics
  • Some practical laboratory skills
  • Ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority-changing environment and manage own workload
  • Initiative, enthusiasm, flexible approach, and ability to work to tight deadlines

Security Clearance

You will need to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE. The nature of our work does mean you need to be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years in order to apply for SC clearance and 10 years for DV.
