SEN Teacher

We are seeking an experienced SEN Teacher to join our team at Esland Bedford School, an independent SEMH special school for up to 50 children aged 8-18. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering lessons to pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4, with a focus on supporting students with Anxiety, Emotionally-based School Avoidance, and ASD.
Key Responsibilities:- Deliver the curriculum as relevant to the age and ability group/subject/s that you teach
- Be responsible for the preparation and development of teaching materials, teaching programmes and pastoral arrangements as appropriate
- Be accountable for the attainment, progress and outcomes of pupils' you teach
- Be aware of pupils' capabilities, their prior knowledge and plan teaching and differentiate appropriately to build on these, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn
- Have a clear understanding of the pupils' varying special educational needs and be able to use and evaluate distinctive SEND teaching approaches to engage and support them
- Use an appropriate range of observation, assessment, monitoring and recording strategies as a basis for setting challenging learning objectives for pupils of all backgrounds, abilities and dispositions, monitoring learners' progress and levels of attainment
- Maintain up to date pupil records, including recording assessment data, maintaining accurate safeguarding records and developing effective liaison with parents and carers.
- Give pupils regular feedback, both orally and through accurate marking, and encourage pupils to respond to the feedback
- Demonstrate unconditional positive regard to pupils, utilising strategies such as PACE and Zones of Regulation in order to support pupils in managing their own behaviour over time
- Maintain the highest levels of expectation of pupils, supporting them to overcome barriers to learning
- Participate in any relevant meetings/professional development opportunities at the school, which relate to the learners, curriculum or organisation of the school including pastoral arrangements and assemblies
- Ensure that colleagues working with you are appropriately involved in supporting learning and understand the roles they are expected to fulfil
- Liaise with specialist professionals and implement specialist recommendations within the classroom.
- Work collaboratively with others to develop effective professional relationships.
- Communicate effectively with parents/carers with regard to pupils' achievements
- Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school.
- Carry out any reasonable tasks related to the post that may be requested
- Qualified Teacher Status
- Degree qualification or equivalent
- Demonstrable outcomes for pupils as a teacher
- Experience as a KS2/KS3/KS4/KS5 teacher
- Expert understanding of inclusive pedagogy
- Experience of assessment without levels including tracking pupil progress
- Knowledge and understanding of statutory assessment arrangements at KS2 to KS5
- Knowledge and understanding of effective strategies to manage the behaviour of pupils
- Excellent knowledge of inclusion including SEMH, EAL, bilingual learners, minority ethnic achievement and equality (race, disability, and gender)
- Excellent understanding of safeguarding, especially the safety and welfare of vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils
- The ability and willingness to teach a range of subjects
- An understanding of a range of SEND needs, including SEMH and ASD
- Contribution to the educational and social development of individual pupils
- The ability to form effective relationships with young people, their families/carers and external agencies
- To ensure that young people's views and wishes are sought and acted upon where appropriate
- To maintain an appropriate environment, and provide appropriate resources, to meet the needs of all pupils
- To liaise with other teachers and teaching assistants in the team to ensure effective deployment of resources
- Ability to set high standards and act as a positive role model
- Has self-belief, senses opportunities, and takes the initiative in moving things forward in a positive way
- Communicates effectively both orally and in writing with pupils and adults
- Approachable, caring and kind
- Ability to work under pressure, has a sense of humour and appropriate work/life balance
- Establishes and maintains constructive and open relationships with parents/carers, staff and the local community
- Possesses a strong set of values and beliefs and shows awareness of how these fit in with the values of the school
- Is committed to continued self-professional development and is always trying to find ways to improve and be the best they can be
- Experience of working in a specialist provision, either a special school or additionally resourced provision within a mainstream school
