About the Role

Archangel Lightworks is a pioneering connectivity company that is revolutionizing wireless technology to create the space-enabled networks of the future. We are passionate about improving humanity's communications infrastructure and solving some of Earth's most critical problems from economic inclusion to climate change.

We are seeking an experienced Optical Systems Engineer with a strong background in design and Assembly Integration and Test (AIT) to join our team. As a key member of our optical engineering team, you will be responsible for the development of our optical subsystems, from requirements definition to testing in the field.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Development: Design laser communication terminal optical sub-systems for extreme environments, including telescopes and relays.
  • Requirements Definition and Trade Off Analysis: Define and analyze complex optical system requirements, finding the optimal balance of performance against cost.
  • Modelling and Optimization: Model and optimize optical system performance, including tolerancing and testing.
  • Test and Validation: Conduct practical breadboard testing to validate modelled data and work with AIT engineers to define and execute test procedures for optical subsystems.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership of subsystem development projects and manage suppliers of optical and photonic components.
Requirements
  • Experience: Experience defining requirements on optical systems, modelling and performing trades studies to inform design selection.
  • Optical Design and Analysis: Optical design/analysis experience using Zemax for design, optimization and tolerancing.
  • Hands-on Lab Experience: Hands-on lab experience designing and carrying out tests for relevant optical systems.
Desirable Skills
  • Technical Project Planning: Technical project planning and systems engineering experience, ideally in a Model Based Systems Engineering context.
  • Complex Electro Optical Systems: Experience designing complex Electro Optical Systems for extreme environments in mass constrained applications.
  • Adaptive Optics: Experience with adaptive optics, turbulence modelling, measurement and compensation methods.
  • High Power Lasers: Experience with high power lasers, optical amplifiers, and relevant safety requirements.
  • Optical Instrument Calibration: Experience with optical instrument calibration and alignment, and procedure definition.
  • Optical and Photonic Components: Familiarity with optical and photonic components relevant to free space optical communications.

Location: Hybrid with travel when required. Our office is based in Osney Mead, Oxford.
