Lead the Future of Public Services as Head of Engineering - Drive Innovation, Collaboration, and Transformation in a Dynamic Government Environment

Are you an experienced engineering leader passionate about driving technical strategy and delivering impactful solutions? We are seeking a Head of Engineering to lead teams in the public sector, building secure, scalable, and user-centered services.

  1. Be an advocate for a collaborative, positive working environment where software engineers recognize and value the contributions of others and actively support the success of the whole team.
  2. Lead in driving the technical strategy for the Client's systems, aligned with organizational objectives, balancing business needs, resilient engineering, recruitment, and budgets.
  3. Drive delivery and lead in software development, ensuring solutions adhere to architectural principles and software design standards.
  4. Coach, mentor, and train teams and individuals to improve software development practices, focusing on engineering practices and removing/avoiding single points of failure.
  5. Balance multiple priorities and deal with ambiguity in role and responsibility.
  6. Introduce new efficient processes and concepts in a continuously delivering DevOps environment.
  7. Deliver within the Government Digital Service Standard.
  8. Deliver solutions using human-centered, research-driven, inclusive-design practices.
  9. Incrementally replace enterprise legacy systems, including corporate finance systems.
  10. Promote and ensure adherence to modern software development practices.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with Java and Spring Boot based microservices, public cloud technologies such as AWS, and leading engineering teams within government projects. They will also be able to identify efficiencies and adapt ways of working and methods of delivery.

We offer a contract position with hybrid working and an initial 6-month term, potentially extendable. The salary range for this role is estimated at £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience. Candidates must be eligible for BPSS clearance and require active SC Clearance.
