As a Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff with the City of Birmingham, you will play a vital role in maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and serving the community with integrity and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct administrative and preparatory activities, including equipment inspection and uniform maintenance.
- Perform routine patrol activities, such as patrolling high-problem areas and enforcing state laws and local ordinances.
- Respond to emergency calls, evaluate scenes, and provide assistance as needed.
- Investigate incidents, gather evidence, and compile reports.
- Apprehend and arrest suspects, provide verbal commands, and search individuals and premises.
- Handle hazardous situations, including evacuating persons and identifying hazardous materials.
- Enforce and regulate traffic and motor vehicle rules, administer field sobriety tests, and issue warnings and citations.
- Render medical assistance, evaluate scenes, and transport individuals to hospitals or jails as needed.
- Deal with juveniles, place them under investigation or custody, and notify guardians.
- Handle disputes and conflicts, separate parties, and provide information to resolve conflicts.
- Control crowds, establish police lines, and maintain control using verbal commands and physical force as needed.
- Complete reports and written documentation, and forward them to the chain of command and appropriate parties.
- Cooperate with other agencies, submit information, and participate in joint actions.
- Interact with the public, perform community relations activities, and conduct presentations to promote public safety.
- Work as a team with other officers, inform responding officers of scene information, and coordinate actions.
- Participate in training activities, complete basic and advanced technical skills trainings, and maintain APOST certification.
- Meet all minimum qualifications, including no felony convictions, honorable discharge, and citizenship.
- Option A: Previously APOSTC certified and required to complete Refresher training for reinstatement.
- Option B: Possess an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited College or University.
- Option C: Possess a high school diploma or GED and pass the ACT WorkKeys Assessment for Law Enforcement Officers.
