Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled Highway Maintenance Operator to join their team in the Lynchburg District. As a key member of the Bryant Area Headquarters, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to highway maintenance, including clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and operating equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, and tar distributors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team to clear drainage, remove debris, cut brush, and perform roadway maintenance.
  • Operate equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributors, rollers, loaders, and mowing tractors.
  • Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks.
  • Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road.
  • Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or related field desired.
  • Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.

What We Offer

The Commonwealth of Virginia offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, including a $3,000 sign-on bonus for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.
