Principal Sustainability Consultant (Whole Life Carbon)

A career-defining opportunity has arisen for a creative and driven Principal Sustainability Consultant to join our Sustainability Group. Based in Bournemouth or Reading, you will be part of our broader Sustainability group with a presence in every Hoare Lea office across the country.

Hoare Lea is an award-winning engineering consultancy with a creative team of engineers, designers, and technical specialists.

As a pioneer in Design for Performance (DfP), we took our project (Timber Square) to become the UK's first NABERSUK Design for Performance project to complete the Independent Design Review and score 5* design reviewed target rating.

At Hoare Lea, you'll have the opportunity to work on exciting projects and engage with the industry. We regularly collaborate with UKGBC, CIBSE, and were one of the first to sign up to support the Building Services Engineers Declare initiative.

You'll be part of progressive and exciting projects, able to experience innovative schemes and gain knowledge across all sectors.

The Role

As part of the role, you will:

  1. Take ownership and deliver small-scale projects.
  2. Support senior team members on large-scale projects and take ownership of specific workstreams.
  3. Lead workshops with the client and design team and communicate information in a clear and concise manner.
  4. Support the training and development of junior members of the team.
  5. Undertake a range of modelling and analysis, which may include but not limited to: embodied carbon of materials, circular economy opportunities, and building performance simulation.
  6. Support the drive towards realising net zero whole life carbon in our projects.
  7. Work with other members of the Sustainability Group on research and development initiatives to allow us to stay at the cutting edge of knowledge in our industry.
What We Are Looking For

Key Skills & Knowledge:

You will have detailed knowledge, competence, and qualifications in a selection of the following fields.

  1. Whole life carbon
  2. Energy strategies
  3. Building Regulations Part L assessments using Elmhurst and IES
  4. NABERS UK modelling
  5. In-Use energy modelling and assessment
  6. Dynamic modelling for thermal comfort assessments and overheating risk assessments
  7. BREEAM and HQM assessments
  8. Bespoke sustainability charters
  9. Health and wellbeing strategies and certification
  10. Production of planning documents including sustainability statements, energy statements, whole life carbon reports, and circular economy statements
  11. Net zero carbon strategies and embodied carbon calculations
  12. Circular economy strategies.

About You:

  1. Experience working within sustainability consultancy, you will be looking for a new challenge within a practice at the very forefront of our field.
  2. You will bring expertise (with a degree in an applicable field) and a passion for creating sustainable solutions.
  3. You will be confident in leading sustainability workshops with design teams.
  4. You will have good communication skills and an enthusiasm for working within a team environment.
