Underwriting Manager Role Overview

AXA XL is seeking an experienced Underwriting Manager to lead our International Casualty team in the UK. This is a key role that requires a strong technical underwriting background, excellent people management skills, and the ability to drive business growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain underwriting procedures and processes to ensure adherence to company guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives within the underwriting function, including data analytics and risk management.
  • Facilitate underwriting and technical committees to ensure clear communication and informed decision-making.
  • Conduct regular reviews of underwriting guidelines and recommend updates to reflect industry best practices and regulatory changes.
  • Assist in underwriting file reviews to ensure adherence to established principles and procedures.
  • Analyze underwriting data to identify potential risk areas and recommend mitigating strategies.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of new product areas, including researching and staying current on industry trends.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on underwriting performance and risk management activities.
  • Lead and develop a team of underwriters, acting as a referral point and imparting underwriting knowledge and skills.
  • Underwrite high-profile and complex UK and global accounts, complying with underwriting guidelines and authorities.
  • Act as the escalation point for global and strategic partners, leading and promoting strategic relationships with brokers, clients, and reinsurers.

Requirements

  • Extensive technical underwriting experience and broker management in Casualty.
  • Significant people management credential and effective hands-on team leadership in accordance with AXA XL corporate values.
  • Experience in portfolio management and data analytics.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills combined with a positive work ethic.
  • Ability to respond to a changing environment with flexibility and innovation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication, including active listening, networking, marketing, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with customers, producers, and brokers.
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
