Job Summary

The Custodian position at Danbury Public Schools is responsible for providing custodial services at assigned sites, ensuring a clean, safe, and attractive environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role involves performing a variety of special cleaning operations, assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events, and supporting district maintenance staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Clean assigned facilities and grounds, including classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, and multipurpose rooms, to maintain a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Perform minor maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture, and fixtures, such as changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags.
  • Conduct summer maintenance tasks, including stripping and waxing floors, moving furniture, and painting.
  • Prepare sites for daily operations, including opening gates, raising flags, and sweeping walkways.
  • Replenish classroom and restroom supplies, such as paper towels and soap.
  • Respond to immediate safety and operational concerns, such as facility damage, vandalism, and alarms.
  • Assist in maintaining seasonal grounds work, including snow removal.
  • Perform work at heights of up to 12 feet using ladders and/or scaffolding.
  • Demonstrate daily attendance and punctuality to ensure the goals of the work unit can be met.
  • Secure facilities and grounds, including doors, gates, alarms, lights, and equipment.
  • Support district maintenance staff in completing site custodial activities.
  • Attend in-service training sessions to receive information on new and/or improved procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision.
  • Team building, decision-making, problem-solving, and effective verbal and listening communication skills.
Working Conditions

This is a physically demanding position that requires standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating medium-weight cleaning equipment, and moving desks and furniture. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 3:00pm - 11:30pm, with the possibility of adjusting hours to meet the needs of the district.
