About the Role

We are seeking an experienced lawyer to join our Legal team in Jersey, supporting our Trust and Fiduciary Services (TFS CI) business, a division of Global Private Banking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise on a broad range of technical legal issues affecting the TFS CI business, including complex, high-risk, or material impact matters.
  • Act as a trusted adviser, providing commercially sensitive, pragmatic, and strategic legal support and advice in a cost-effective manner.
  • Identify and oversee actual and potential legal risks in the TFS CI business, advising on risk mitigation strategies.
  • Implement and review legal policies and procedures to manage Group exposure to legal risks within the TFS CI business.
  • Evaluate and respond to changes in legal and regulatory requirements, horizon scanning for emerging legal risks, and ensuring appropriate action is taken by the TFS CI business.
  • Support Senior Legal Counsel for TFS CI and the wider CIIOM and Global TFS Legal Teams, including assisting with larger strategic projects and general legal and operational support.
  • Ensure timely escalation of significant issues, developments, and challenges in relation to TFS CI businesses.
  • Manage the appointment and supervision of external legal counsel where required by the business for specialist legal advice.
  • Develop supportive relationships with other specialist advisory functions, including regulatory compliance and tax.

Requirements

  • Legally qualified, ideally with 2-5 years PQE or equivalent experience. Offshore experience in jurisdictions including Jersey is beneficial.
  • Knowledge and experience of non-contentious trusts law is essential. International trust and trustee experience, as well as contentious trust experience, is desirable.
  • Self-starter with the ability to learn quickly about the HSBC Group corporate structures, its business, and personnel, and develop a clear understanding of HSBC's corporate culture.
  • Strong ability to deal with internal and external stakeholders and to prioritise a demanding workload in terms of legal risk and commercial consideration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to generate clear and concise written and oral reports to management at various levels.
  • Lateral thinking/problem solving and the ability to understand complex issues and their impact from a legal, financial, and reputational perspective to reach a solution.
  • Ability to keep up-to-date with key legal and regulatory developments impacting the TFS CI business and advise the business accordingly to ensure ongoing compliance.
