Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Laboratory Technician to join our team in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. The successful candidate will provide support for the operation of the Structures Laboratory, facilitating engineering research by designing, building and operating specialist testing rigs, preparing test specimens and providing practical insights.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Section's Structures Lab on the design (for experimentation) and construction of rigs and test samples within the Section's Workshop facilities on a range of machine tools and fabrication equipment.
  • Provide support and advice to academics and researchers, planning and prioritising work activities with support from the Laboratory Manager.
  • Assemble component test specimens from small to large scale for evaluation in test rig situations.
  • Provide a support service using both traditional and modern workshop skills as required, for the production and modification of equipment for a structure's laboratory application.

Requirements

  • An HNC or equivalent in an engineering subject is essential/desirable depending upon the level of appointment, together with experience of working in a university workshop/laboratory environment.
  • Practical experience in the use of traditional engineering machines and hand tools and the ability to work from engineering drawings and written instructions.
  • An ability to organise your own workload from a prescribed list of tasks is essential, coupled with the ability to deal with a wide range of people and a flexible attitude towards work and meeting deadlines.
