Job Title: Chief Communications Officer for External and Internal Voice

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Chief Communications Officer to lead our external and internal communications efforts. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for shaping and driving the voice and positioning of the British Red Cross through its earned, owned, and internal channels.



Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a highly responsive and integrated news and PR function that secures significant national media coverage and supports our organisational strategic priorities.
  • Demonstrate exceptional leadership on media and public relations handling in times of crisis or emergency response, ensuring effective collaboration with colleagues within the British Red Cross, across the Red Cross Movement, and with others as required.
  • Work closely with policy, research, and advocacy colleagues to support delivery of overall influencing strategy and identify opportunities for original, evidence-based stories.
  • Maintain oversight and development of external messaging and narrative to ensure that British Red Cross comment and opinion is picked up by influential external outlets.
  • Oversee the organisation's internal communications content and channel management, driving high engagement with our people – staff and volunteers.
  • Lead the organisation's communications on significant corporate issues, working across teams and with senior stakeholders.
  • Provide Executive Leadership Team and Board of Trustees with effective guidance on significant issues and ensure effective reputation management systems are in place to handle sensitive or controversial issues.


Requirements
  • Excellent working knowledge of the media and communications landscape.
  • Extensive experience of working as a communications specialist and leader in a large, high-profile organisation.
  • Leading the planning and implementation of media and PR plans for an organisation with diverse media/PR needs.
  • High-level written, verbal, and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work well and calmly under pressure across all disciplines in a large and complex organisation.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of social media developments and best practice.
